automatic settings became permanent but also not really?

wanted to see what automatic graphics did, but it kinda made my game look pretty ugly so i changed the settings back to what i had them as before. however while some things did change the game still doesnt look quite right and it's kinda jarring restarting also didnt seem to do much. i'd rather not reinstall and start over either...
